Tankless water heaters · Water heater replacement
Navien tankless water heater replaces a corroded tank in Greenville
A corroded tank water heater replaced with a Navien NPE-240A2 tankless unit in the crawl space.
The problem
The tank water heater in this Greenville home's crawl space had reached the end of its life. The top of the tank was heavily corroded.
Corrosion like this usually means a leak is not far off, and a leak in a crawl space can go unnoticed for a long time. Most tank water heaters last about 8 to 12 years.
What we found
With the tank this far gone, a repair was not worth doing. The water heater needed to be replaced, and the homeowner went with a tankless unit instead of another tank.
What we did
- Removed the old tank water heater
- Mounted a Navien NPE-240A2 tankless water heater on the crawl space wall
- Connected new gas, water and condensate lines
- Set the temperature and tested the system
The result
Continuous hot water from a wall-mounted Navien unit, with the old corroded tank gone and nothing sitting on the crawl space floor.
A tankless unit like this one should be flushed once a year to remove mineral scale. With yearly descaling, many tankless units last 15 to 20 years.
Questions about this job
Can a tankless water heater go in a crawl space?
Often, yes. The unit needs room around it for service, a proper vent, a gas line sized for the unit, and a condensate drain. In a crawl space we mount it on the wall so it stays off the ground.
What is the Navien NPE-240A2?
A gas condensing tankless water heater from Navien's NPE-A2 line. The A2 models have a small built-in buffer tank and recirculation pump, and the 240 is one of the larger sizes, made for whole-home use. Ethical Plumbing is Navien certified.
How long does a tankless water heater last?
Many tankless units last 15 to 20 years with yearly descaling, compared with about 8 to 12 years for a tank.
Is tankless the right choice for every home?
Not always. It depends on how much hot water your home uses at once, your gas line and where the unit can go. See tankless water heater installation for how we size a unit and compare it with a tank.
