Fix the leak, then decide about the pipe

Most pipe problems start the same way: a drip under a sink, a stain on the ceiling, a spike in the water bill or a pipe that splits in a freeze. The first job is always to stop the water and find exactly where it is coming from. Leak detection lets us do that without opening more of your home than needed.

Then comes the real question: repair the spot or replace the pipe? A single failed fitting on otherwise healthy pipe is a repair. Leak after leak on aging galvanized, polybutylene or thin copper usually means the pipe is failing as a whole, and repiping costs less than chasing it. We show you both options with prices.

Signs your pipes need attention

Call when you notice:

  • Stains or damp spots on walls or ceilings
  • A water bill that jumps for no reason
  • Low pressure throughout the house
  • Rusty or discolored water
  • Banging or knocking when taps close
  • Visible corrosion on exposed pipe

Common pipe types in Upstate homes

  • Galvanized steel

Common before the 1960s. Rusts from inside, slowly cutting pressure.

  • Polybutylene

Gray plastic used from the late 1970s to mid 1990s. Prone to sudden failure.

  • Copper

Long-lasting, but older or thin copper can develop pinhole leaks.

  • PEX and CPVC

Modern plastic pipe. Durable and the usual choice for repairs and repipes.

Pipes in Upstate homes

Hard freezes are rare here, which is why they cause so much damage when they come. Pipes in crawl spaces, garages and exterior walls were often installed with little insulation, and a few nights in the teens can split them. Learn how to prevent and handle frozen pipes.

Under the house, red clay soil and crawl space humidity are hard on older pipe and fittings. A yearly look under the house, part of the VIP Prevention Plan, catches small leaks before they rot subfloors.

Leaks under driveways and roads

When a water line leaks under a driveway, sidewalk or road, many companies start by breaking up the concrete or asphalt. We do not. We bore underneath the pavement and run the repaired or new line through, so the surface above stays intact. That saves you the cost and mess of replacing a driveway on top of the plumbing bill.

I would like to say that if you need someone to do any kind of repair for your plumbing, you need to contact ethical plumbing. They came out because we had a very bad leak with a pipe in our yard and they got it all accomplished in one day I am so grateful.

Highly recommend Ethical Plumbers! They exchanged our old water heat tank with a tankless water heater and repiped the crawl space. From the first contact on the phone, the next day visit of the technician Daniel, then Ivan and Asher who did the whole work within less than two days – we felt…

Ethical Plumbing earned every one of these stars. I coordinate maintenance for NewShire Property Management in Greenville, SC, and we had a sewer line problem at one of our properties on Hampton Avenue. Another plumbing company had already quoted us $10,000 to $15,000 and told us a large conex box…

Pipe repair and leak detection FAQs

Do you have to tear up my driveway to fix a leak under it?

Usually not. We bore under driveways, sidewalks and roads to repair or replace the line, so the pavement above stays in place and you are not paying to replace concrete or asphalt too.

What should I do first if a pipe is leaking?

Shut off the main water valve, then call us. If the leak is near electrical outlets or appliances, turn off power to that area.

Should I repair or replace my pipes?

One failed spot on healthy pipe is a repair. Repeated leaks on aging pipe usually mean replacing it costs less over time. We show you both options.

How do I know what kind of pipe I have?

Look where the water line enters the house or at the water heater. Gray plastic is often polybutylene; dull gray metal with threaded joints is galvanized. We can identify it on a visit.

Why do my pipes bang when I turn off a faucet?

That is water hammer, caused by water stopping suddenly. Loose pipe straps or high water pressure make it worse, and it can loosen fittings over time.

What water pressure is too high?

Household pressure above about 80 psi strains pipes, fixtures and water heaters. A pressure reducing valve keeps it in a safe range.

Can you repair a pipe under a slab?

Yes. Options include a spot repair through the slab or rerouting the line through walls or the attic. We explain the trade-offs and prices.

Does homeowner's insurance cover burst pipes?

Many policies cover sudden water damage but not the pipe repair itself. Check your policy, and ask us for photos of what we find.

How long does a pipe repair take?

Most spot repairs are done in a single visit. Larger replacements and repipes are scheduled and quoted in writing.
