Questions about this job

What is a sewer lateral?

It is the pipe that carries everything from your home's drains out to the public sewer main. The part on your property is usually the homeowner's responsibility, and your sewer provider can tell you where theirs begins.

Why camera a sewer line before digging?

A camera shows where the line is broken, sagging or full of roots, and how deep it runs. That way the dig happens in the right place and only the pipe that needs replacing is replaced. See sewer camera inspection.

How long does an old sewer line last?

Clay and cast iron lines often last 50 to 70 years, though it varies with soil, roots and how the line was laid.

What are the signs of a sewer line problem?

Several drains backing up at once, water coming up in the tub or shower, a sewage smell inside or outside, wet or sunken spots in the yard, and gurgling toilets and drains. See sewer line repair.
